Rain Water Harvesting Project

Nov 10, 2011

The Caribbean Coastal Area Management (C-CAM) Foundation received a grant from the UNDP to implement a Climate Change Adaptation project in three communities Old Harbour Bay (St. Catherine), Mitchell Town and Salt River (Clarendon).

The primary aim of this aspect of the project is to see rainwater harvesting systems being installed on the houses of residents and public buildings within the communities. The project focuses on those residents that are deemed as being most vulnerable.

Rainwater harvesting is a technology used for collecting and storing rainwater from rooftops, the land surface or rock catchments using simple techniques such as jars and pots or can be more complex techniques such as underground check dams.

C-CAM Foundation provided the beneficiaries with the Gutter system with all the necessary fittings, Tanks, Mesh for covering tanks and most importantly training and technical support. Persons are responsible for providing a suitable base for the tank, installing the gutter on their home after successful completion of the training and in the long term for maintaining the system.

There have been 25 beneficiaries on the programme so far including private homes, community centers and schools.
